For Christian unity: As we begin this octave of prayer may your Holy Spirit open our minds and hearts that it becomes an occasion for renewed commitment to strive for a genuine ecumenism, grounded in the experience and hope of the early Church. Lord, in mercy.
For those affected by current and past natural disasters and conflicts: Grant consolation to the bereaved; hope to the anxious and distressed; patience to all who suffer and your saving power to all who need your mercy and protection. Lord, in mercy.
For all who are gathered here: John the Baptist recognised Christ as the Lamb of God, may our sharing of the Eucharist today strengthen us as active messengers capable of making the Gospel relevant in our troubled world. Lord, in mercy.
For all who have died recently: May they be called to the dawn of a new life and follow the Lamb of God to the heavenly Jerusalem. Lord, in mercy.

With readiness to welcome Christ, who comes each day by His grace, we now present our needs to the Father.
Reader:
For the Church, that like a herald’s voice in the desert, it may never cease proclaiming what is true and just, even when unpopular. Lord in your mercy
For the repose of the soul of Nelson Mandela: that peace and reconciliation will be his living legacy to people throughout the world. Lord in your mercy
Christ showed his love for the sick, the poor and vulnerable in society. We pray that we will also keep their needs in mind and demonstrate our love for them as we strive to follow Christ's example. Lord in your mercy
For those who have died and whose anniversaries occur at this time: may they be raised to a new and eternal life. Lord in your mercy,
Finally we pray to Mary our Mother and ask her to intercede for us in all our prayers as we say, Hail Mary...

The Priest introduces the prayers:
Brothers and sisters, as we prepare for the coming of Our Lord Jesus in this Advent season, let us earnestly ask his mercy, as we pray for the Church and for the world.
Reader:
We pray for the Church, and all Christians,
That we may be more and more aware of our unique mission in the world, and so strive to serve mankind by reflecting Christ in all we say and do.
Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.
We pray for the peace of the world,
that those in charge of political affairs may always be conscious that true peace is based upon the dignity of man, whatever his race, colour or creed. Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.
We pray for the sick and those who care for them,
that the Lord Jesus may heal the sick, rid the world of hunger and protect us from all disasters.
Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.
We pray for those departed this life,
that when the Lord Jesus comes again, we may be reunited with them in his everlasting Kingdom.
Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.
We join our prayers with our Lady, as we say: Hail Mary.

Almighty God,
give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and to put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility;
