First Sunday in Lent: The Universal Prayer / Bidding Prayers / Intercessions / Prayer of the Faithful

First Sunday in Lent

‘Having exhausted all these ways of tempting him, the devil left him, to return at the appointed time.’ (Luke 4:13).

Priest:
Today's first reading reminds us how the Lord led his people out of slavery. He is our light, our hope and our salvation, so let us turn to him in prayer now, bringing before him all our needs.

Reader:
Let us pray for the liberation of all enslaved persons around the world. We remember also those suffering from the slavery of addiction, illness or poverty.
Lord, hear us.

For ourselves: that, through prayer, fasting and almsgiving, this Lent may be an opportunity to move away from selfishness and pride to a deepening love of God and neighbour.
Lord, hear us.

For the needy and hungry of the world and for the development and relief work of CAFOD. May this Friday's Fast Day serve to remind us of the call to live more simply and put our faith into action.
Lord, hear us.

For all those who have died, and for those whose anniversaries occur at this time: may the Lord free them from death, and give them a place at his banquet in heaven.
Lord, hear us.

May Mary, who was ever attentive to God's word. join her prayers to ours as we pray Hail Mary ...

Let us now pray for a moment in silence.

Priest:
Father, you sent your Son to bring healing to the world. Help us to recognise our needs and the needs of others. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
